Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Tests

I want to create Choose-Your-Own-Adventure scantron tests (not for all questions) similar to the way the GRE and other computerized tests are done.  For example, is a student gets C on question number 10, they skip down to question number 15.  This will allow the teacher (me) to figure out exactly where a student may be making a mistake in a multi-step problem.

Mistakes and Regrades

To ensure that students take regrading seriously.

1. Let students know that you may have intentionally marked some of their right answers incorrectly.  If the student is able to find an incorrectly graded question, they get extra credit on top of the normal regrade.

2. Give the students the opportunity to correct their mistakes and search for the incorrectly marked question.

Teacher Fundraisers

I heard about this from a student.  The teachers at Bronx Science put on a show for fundraising.  The teachers get to show their talents and the students get to see their teachers make a fool out of themselves.  Apparently, the fundraising has been very successful.

Possibly videotape and put up on youtube to bring even more recognition.

Jalapeños vs Sleeping Students

A solution for sleepy students in classrooms.

1. Keep a jar of Jalapeños (or something really sour like Warheads)
2. Let students know that if you catch them sleeping in class, they will be forced to eat one.

The Study Guide

This idea was given to me by Professor Garrity.  Thanks Dr. G!

1. At the beginning of each new section, give students a handout with a column for vocabulary words and a column for descriptions and examples.

2. Let the students know that at least 5 terms and definitions must be on the sheet for full credit. (No partial credit)

3. If the student hands in the study guide with the unit test, they receive an extra 3 points on the test.
